THUNDERSTORMS & TORNADOS & FLOODS

Make sure to keep a variety of New batteries around in case of a Power failure. Unplug any appliances such as your electronic 's' or other equipment you may have in case of a lightning strike directly or close by. Try to stay off the phone during the storm in in case of a shock coming through the telephone line from lightning or static electricity in area. Or have a really good power Surge Protector for your equipment & check your equipment to see how many joules it can absorb safely in case of a direct hit or hit close by. ( joules ~ the current of electrical, mechanical & thermal energy )

Keep a eye on the skies. Let trained weather spotters report the weather & your local law enforcement officials. Listen to your meteorologist's for weather bulletins. Keep tuned in with your local Weather Radio, Television, AM/FM Radio, Computer for the latest  weather bulletins.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ~ TORNADO ~ FLOOD WATCH means weather conditions is favorable to be severe with or no advanced warning.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ~ TORNADO ~ FLOOD WARNING means severe weather is taking place right now in your area & you should seek shelter immediately.

A Siren will sound outside for a Tornado Warning. A Siren will sound outside for a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in some counties of Minnesota. Even during a Severe Thunderstorm warning, a Tornado can touchdown so be aware. The sirens that sound are for people outside there homes not intended for people inside there homes unless they are fortunate to hear it.

Do not record (Video Camera) the weather or take pictures, many things can happen that will be unexpected. Besides it is dangerous. Do not stand under a tree. Get to safety. Lightning is Dangerous & has a broad range spectrum when flashing. If you feel your hair standing up on your skin, drop and crouch to the ground immediately, usually means that you are about to be struck be lightning.

Grab yourself some Large Blankets & Pillows to protect yourself with. If you have anything larger such has Chair/Couch Cushions or even a decent size bed mattress that you can handle easily, then use it to help protect you were ever you might be & cover your Head/Body with it.

Go to the lowest part of your home (basement under the stairs). If no basement or storm shelter is available, go to the most interior part of your home (center), hallway, or the bath tub, under a strong table & away from windows, or even a closet, & cover yourself.

Before arriving at your camp site ask the Park Ranger if they have a designated storm shelter before a storm hits, be prepared. If you are camping outside in your trailer or tent go to the lowest part of the campground area, lay flat & cover your head or & go to the designated storm shelter. If you live in a Trailer Park, get out & go to the Designated Storm Shelter. If you are stuck outside, seek shelter inside as soon as possible.

If your driving in your vehicle, stop & get out & go to your nearest ditch, lay down flat, face down & cover your head.  Avoid going under a bridge (overpass) because of the wind current that circulates the air like a wind tunnel.

Do not go near downed Power Lines. Even if there down there still can be power. Call your local Electric Company or Law Enforcement Officials.

Do not drive through flooded roads. The road beneath could be washed out, the water current could overturn & wash you down stream including the vehicle. In case of a flood, go to the highest point you can in your area.

Listen to your public officials in case of an emergency. If you are hurt or someone gets hurt, call 911 immediately. They will instruct you in what to do & or be dispatched to rescue.

If no phone is available, Stay Calm & help will find you.

WINTER Season

During the Winter Season if a Blizzard, Cold, Wind Chill, Frost, Freeze, Ice, Blowing Snow, Freezing Rain Storm occurs listen to the forecast if it is a Watch or Warning just stay inside your home, trailer, apartment, business, or where ever you are & stay warm.

Winter Survival Kit usually contains the following, sleeping bag or blankets (warmth), high calorie foods such as candy bars, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, extra dry clothing, knife, matches & paper to melt snow for water & water container, shovel, compass, larger container with a cover & soft tissues, jumper booster cables, tow rope, road maps, sack of sand, & a cell phone. There is many combinations to use in your emergency winter survival kit.

The extreme Cold Temperature & Frozen Lakes, Rivers, Streams, Ponds, or other water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to set in your body were you can experience shock, shakiness, numbness, delirious behavior, sleepiness & even death. If you have to go outside, then wear several layers of clothing to trap the heat with in your body.

Get your Jacket, Hat, Gloves, Scarf, Snow Suit, Long Johns (long underwear), winter snow boots & put them on. Cover up any exposed skin because frost bite can form quickly pending the temperature & wind chill. In the event of frost bite, carefully remove clothing & submerge the body part in warm water, do not rub the infected area & do not use hot water. In case of Severe Frostbite seek medical attention immediately.

If you have to drive your vehicle, then drive slowly & cautiously & make sure to have plenty of stopping distance between you & the other vehicle or object. Beware of Black Ice that forms on the roads because it is indivisible to see & it is slippery which can cause a accident.

If your vehicle breaks down, then stay in your vehicle until help arrives & or place a bright colored flag on your antenna or somewhere on the vehicle to inform emergency personal. If your vehicle is running but your stuck because of the snow, roll down the window a little bit so fresh air can enter & keep your heater running. You can also to conserve gas, let your vehicle run for 10-20 minutes then repeat has often as you need to.

When coming upon the snow trucks that plow roads, allow plenty of room so that the plow drivers can see you clearly. When passing snow plows, use caution, it is hard enough for them at times to see the other vehicles behind them or beside them. Snow plows use salt & other chemicals that are laid down on the road. With the road spray that forms from the chemicals, causes your windshield to become dirty so make sure to have plenty of window washing liquid available to replace in your vehicle.

Upon going unto your favorite, frozen lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, or other, always use caution, make sure to have a safety device such as a Whistle, Flotation Device, & 2 ice picks in case the ice breaks from under you. (for example 2 metal pointed screw drivers that have string tide about 2 to 3 feet apart & hang them around your neck)

Ice is never safe on these matters for it hides pockets of warm water in areas you think are safe but could lead you breaking the ice & falling in. Besides lakes, rivers, streams, ponds outside need allot of constant days of freezing temperatures for it to set up & be frozen, but always be aware.

In the event that the ice breaks, after you submerge, stay calm, use your ice picks to grab hold of the ice & pull yourself up, then slide sideways to pull the remaining part of you out of the water & get inside a warm place quickly. If your stuck in your vehicle & the ice breaks, let the vehicle fall through, then calmly either roll down the window or break the window that is closest to you  if your vehicle submerges all the way, climb out & swim up to the surface, then use your ice picks to help pull you out & seek shelter in a warm place.

If you see a person in the frozen water, call for emergency services right a way & let them handle the situation. Unless you have the proper equipment available because during your own rescue you also could be pulled in or fall in yourself if you don't take the proper precautions. Or with in reason get a large enough branch, rope, vehicle jumper cables, anything strong enough that you can reach the victim with & pull the victim out but do not get to close to the hole because the ice around the area could be weak & then you could fall in or break through.
