During the Winter Season if a Blizzard, Cold, Wind
Chill, Frost, Freeze, Ice, Blowing Snow, Freezing Rain Storm occurs
listen to the forecast if it is a Watch or Warning just stay inside your
home, trailer, apartment, business, or where ever you are & stay
warm.
Winter Survival Kit usually contains the following,
sleeping bag or blankets (warmth), high calorie foods such as candy
bars, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, extra dry
clothing, knife, matches & paper to melt snow for water & water
container, shovel, compass, larger container with a cover & soft
tissues, jumper booster cables, tow rope, road maps, sack of sand, &
a cell phone. There is many combinations to use in your emergency winter
survival kit.
The extreme Cold Temperature & Frozen Lakes, Rivers,
Streams, Ponds, or other water temperatures can quickly cause
hypothermia to set in your body were you can experience shock,
shakiness, numbness, delirious behavior, sleepiness & even death. If
you have to go outside, then wear several layers of clothing to trap the
heat with in your body.
Get your Jacket, Hat, Gloves, Scarf, Snow Suit, Long
Johns (long underwear), winter snow boots & put them on. Cover up
any exposed skin because frost bite can form quickly pending the
temperature & wind chill. In the event of frost bite, carefully
remove clothing & submerge the body part in warm water, do not rub
the infected area & do not use hot water. In case of Severe
Frostbite seek medical attention immediately.
If you have to drive your vehicle, then drive slowly
& cautiously & make sure to have plenty of stopping distance
between you & the other vehicle or object. Beware of Black Ice
that forms on the roads because it is indivisible to see & it is
slippery which can cause a accident.
If your vehicle breaks down, then stay in your vehicle
until help arrives & or place a bright colored flag on your antenna
or somewhere on the vehicle to inform emergency personal. If your
vehicle is running but your stuck because of the snow, roll down the
window a little bit so fresh air can enter & keep your heater
running. You can also to conserve gas, let your vehicle run for
10-20 minutes then repeat has often as you need to.
When coming upon the snow trucks that plow roads, allow
plenty of room so that the plow drivers can see you clearly. When
passing snow plows, use caution, it is hard enough for them at times to
see the other vehicles behind them or beside them. Snow plows use salt
& other chemicals that are laid down on the road. With the road
spray that forms from the chemicals, causes your windshield to become
dirty so make sure to have plenty of window washing liquid available to
replace in your vehicle.
Upon going unto your favorite, frozen lakes, rivers,
streams, ponds, or other, always use caution, make sure to have a safety
device such as a Whistle, Flotation Device, & 2 ice picks in case
the ice breaks from under you. (for example 2 metal pointed screw
drivers that have string tide about 2 to 3 feet apart & hang them
around your neck)
Ice is never safe on these matters for it hides pockets
of warm water in areas you think are safe but could lead you breaking
the ice & falling in. Besides lakes, rivers, streams, ponds outside
need allot of constant days of freezing temperatures for it to set up
& be frozen, but always be aware.
In the event that the ice breaks, after you submerge,
stay calm, use your ice picks to grab hold of the ice & pull
yourself up, then slide sideways to pull the remaining part of you out
of the water & get inside a warm place quickly. If your stuck in
your vehicle & the ice breaks, let the vehicle fall through, then
calmly either roll down the window or break the window that is closest
to you if your vehicle submerges all the way, climb out & swim
up to the surface, then use your ice picks to help pull you out &
seek shelter in a warm place.
If you see a person in the frozen water, call for
emergency services right a way & let them handle the situation.
Unless you have the proper equipment available because during your own
rescue you also could be pulled in or fall in yourself if you don't take
the proper precautions. Or with in reason get a large enough branch,
rope, vehicle jumper cables, anything strong enough that you can reach
the victim with & pull the victim out but do not get to close to the
hole because the ice around the area could be weak & then you could
fall in or break through.
